Both major and minor military powers around the world are investing in advanced autonomous systems for offensive and defensive purposes, which is significantly changing how force is used, deployed, and projected. The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) is also increasing the efficiency and precision of these systems, highlighting the belief that embracing new technology can greatly affect military power in all types of conflicts.
Recognised as one of the world’s leading advanced technology and defence groups, EDGE is investing extensively to fast-track research and development (R&D) in autonomous systems and smart munitions. Bringing more than 20 new products to market in the areas of autonomous systems and smart munitions since its inception in November 2019, the United Arab Emirates-based company has many more in the pipeline. EDGE is successfully building a national defense industrial base, increasing in-country value, developing sovereign capabilities, and positioning the UAE as a serious global player within the advanced technology industry. EDGE is also playing a major role in leveraging advanced technologies such as AI to develop superior autonomous solutions, both to bolster national and regional defence and further afield to key markets for export.

In line with the UAE’s Industry 4.0 agenda, EDGE is making significant advancements in boosting the country’s autonomous capabilities. ADASI, a leader in autonomous systems, within the Platforms & Systems cluster of EDGE produces the GARMOOSHA, a tactical unmanned aerial system that can carry payloads of 120 kg with an endurance of 8 hours and range of 150 km.

Combining the expertise of precision-guided systems manufacturer HALCON (within the Missiles & Weapons cluster of EDGE) and ADASI, EDGE has also made impressive strides in the development of loitering munitions. The QX family makes use of AI algorithms to target and strike and has an aim accuracy similar to laser-guided munitions. The SHADOW family carries heavier payloads and provides long-range and high-speed munitions. The RASH family comprises fixed-wing guidance kits that can be attached to a standard mortar or a DESERT STING-16 fragmentation warhead to convert it into a glider-based guided munition system. The HUNTER 2-S is a tube-launched swarming drone equipped with advanced AI technology. Integrated with a fragmentation munition, HUNTER 2-S drones share information to perform coordinated surveillance and strike missions, track and maintain positions, and engage targets. The SCORPIO range of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) is designed to make battlefields and specific environments safer for humans. These systems demonstrate a robust ability to undertake several high-pressure tasks, including public safety, intelligence gathering, and reconnaissance.

The maritime industry is gradually adopting new technologies, particularly unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), as they are increasingly being procured and deployed by naval and border security organizations worldwide. As research and development continue to advance, these vehicles will play a major role in protecting human operators, securing national waters, and supporting naval missions. EDGE is collaborating with both local and global partners to develop advanced unmanned and autonomous maritime platforms, allowing the UAE to take advantage of the expertise of leading industry players.
As EDGE and the UAE continue to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies, the use of interoperable autonomous systems across air, land, and sea will support in hindering hostilities and defending critical infrastructure, borders, and coastlines, ultimately contributing to the safety and security of the country, fostering a secure environment for growth and development.
